Personality:

For the most part, Aoba seems like a pretty ordinary guy (aside from his disastrous fashion sense and long bright blue hair). He's content in living an ordinary life, working in a dead end job as a junk shop sales assistant, and has no particular aspirations beyond floating along in a normal, uninteresting life while helping his grandmother out. In short, he initially comes off as really rather boring. Nice, but boring. You wouldn't think this laid back and ordinary man was once a violent little shit, or that he is perfectly capable of breaking someone's jaw if provoked.

The Aoba of the present is friendly, chatty, and usually goes with the flow of things. However, he is also very honest about his feelings, and his warm heart often shines through. He can come off as overly sentimental as a result – he cherishes his Granny, he cherishes his friends, he cherishes his little robot dog, and if anything happens to any of them he will immediately rush to their aid. In all routes, Aoba forms a genuine attachment to each of the main characters, even one who repeatedly violently assaults him (though it admittedly takes a little bit longer), and he does his best to help them no matter what. He can be pretty persistent about it, too – Noiz in particular finds his genuine care to be frustrating and confusing, but Aoba isn't the slightest bit put off by Noiz's irritability and instead puts his full effort into getting Noiz to understand that it's perfectly okay for him to care.

“Persistent” is actually a word that describes Aoba well – while he seems quite relaxed, the truth is that he is stubborn as hell. If Aoba decides on something, be it invading Platinum Jail to take down Toue, or finding out why the hell Koujaku keeps wandering off, he will stick with it regardless of how much people try to discourage him. He doesn't cave easily to pressure from anyone, friend or otherwise – if he doesn't want to put up with someone's shit, then generally he just won't.

What is far more likely to get him worked up is anything he finds outright embarrassing, in which case he tends to blush, stammer, freak out and yell. He is rather easy to embarrass, it has to be said – even if he's dealing with an established lover he can be awkward and start mumbling.

While he is not particularly hot-headed, Aoba does have a bit of a temper and can be annoyed quite easily. He usually expresses his annoyance through sarcasm and critical comments, and he doesn't often completely snap - even the three neighbourhood brats that harass him at work and cause him no end of frustration rarely get him riled up enough to kick them out of the place. He doesn't shy from using physical violence, but only when it's necessary - being quite a caring person overall, he's more inclined to hold back than to go all out, but that doesn't mean he won't stand up for himself or his friends.

When he learns more about his power, he is distressed by the thought that he is capable of destroying people's minds, which is something completely different from physical harm, and swears to never use it unless it's absolutely necessary – it is better to break a jaw than break a mind.

On the whole, then, Aoba is warm and caring, relaxed, a little lazy, occasionally absent-minded, and easily embarrassed, but also very persistent and perfectly able to stand his ground when it matters.

However, Aoba's personality is also broken.

In actual fact, there are three aspects to Aoba's personality, with each of the three representing the Freudian concepts of the Id, the Ego and the Superego (referred to in fandom as Desire, Reason and Restraint respectively). The current state of affairs is thus: Reason is in control, Desire is suppressed, and Restraint is a blue robotic Japanese Spitz.

When Aoba was younger, these aspects of himself manifested as voices in his mind. The main conflict appears to be between Desire and Reason - at some point, Restraint found that he could no longer exert any influence on Aoba's actions, and subsequently transferred his consciousness into a discarded Allmate (robot companion) that Aoba found, so that he could be an external influence instead of an internal one.

Desire runs almost purely on instinct, going with the flow in a much more aggressive manner than the current Aoba. He is selfish, sadistic, masochistic, fearless and destructive. He can be said to represent Scrap (Aoba's ability to impose his consciousness on others) and appears to hold more awareness and control of that ability, on top of a greater willingness to use it. It is likely that during Aoba's rough youth, Desire had more influence over his actions than he does in the present. Right now though, Desire is suppressed, pushed down by Reason's compassion and love for his friends and family. The suppression is subconscious, however, and Aoba is not fully aware of Desire's existence – he is distressed when he hears Desire's urges for destruction, associating that voice with the negative side of his powers that he is afraid of.

However, Desire does surface on occasion, usually in response to particular triggers. The most common effect is a strong, throbbing headache that tends to hit Aoba when he's particularly stressed out, observing a Rhyme field (Rhyme being a popular cyber fighting game), or following a use of Scrap. Aoba can sometimes hear his other self, too, often urging him to 'destroy' when Aoba is in a particularly stressful situation. More rarely, Desire is also able to temporarily take Reason's place as the dominant personality, generally when Aoba is in an exceptionally bad situation, such as when he is sexually assaulted by Mink. Aoba does not tend to remember when this happens. In the worst case scenario, such as when Aoba believes he has destroyed his best friend's mind in Koujaku's bad ending, this aspect can take over on a much more permanent basis, and will consciously push Reason down.

Desire is not a complete personality, however. It is clearly established that he is still just a part of Aoba, albeit one that Aoba would much rather didn't exist – despite his urges for destruction and how he seems to try and push Reason down when he surfaces, his ultimate goal is really for Aoba to recognise him as a part of himself and accept him. They are two parts of the same person, after all. When Aoba does accept him in the true ending, Desire seems to disappear.

Meanwhile, Restraint is still a robot dog, but it's probably better not to elaborate too much on him. While he used to be part of Aoba, he has become a completely independent entity with a fully developed personality of his own, warranting his own separate application. Just know that Aoba loves him.

Abilities:

Aoba possesses an ability known as Scrap, which allows him to interfere with other people's consciousness. There are two main ways in which Scrap is shown.

Voice.

When Aoba uses a particular tone of voice, he implants ideas into a person's head. This is usually done unintentionally, because his “Scrap” voice also happens to be his “customer service” voice – this is why his sales are so good. He prefers not to use it consciously, but will do so under pressure. His voice can be pretty powerful, as seen in Mink's route when he uses it to convince a group of policemen that their legs are incapable of movement.

Eye contact.

With eye contact, combined with his voice, Aoba is also able to fully enter a person's consciousness, and explore it and alter it. This allows him to see that person's inner workings – their fears, emotions and memory. However, this is very risky, as the wrong move can twist their perceptions or even (in the worst case scenario) destroy their mind completely. While he can use it to help people, by helping them to fight whatever is holding them back, saying or doing the wrong thing at the wrong time can be disastrous for both him and his target.

It's also worthwhile to note that, while it's not an ability as such, Aoba has sensation in his hair, so he can really feel when it's touched. He really does not like his hair being touched, because it can seriously hurt. This is pretty much the entire reason why his hair is such a mess – past the shoulders, the sensation is dulled, and at that point he trims it himself.

First Person:

I can't believe I got a Coil. Isn't it a bit weird? I mean, for weeks there's been no sort of technology, but now I have a working Coil. Not that I'm complaining! These things were always really convenient, it's just kind of out of the blue. You know?

Anyway, this is Aoba.

Honestly, I was never really into online social networks, but given how things are, it's probably best to keep in touch with everyone, right? So, if you really want to get hold of me, you can use this. Call me, or email me, or something. I really don't mind if you want to talk about stuff.

See you.

Third Person:

“Granny?”

The cracking voice felt like it was crashing through the silence, making Aoba wince. It had taken a minute for the word to be spoken - a silent minute of staring in shock at the ruined scene of his kitchen, mouth hanging open in disbelief. The smashed tiles were covered in grime, the fridge rusting in the corner, sink hanging from the wall, table in splinters scattered across the floor.

“How...?” His mouth was so dry from shock. Aoba licked at his lips and tried to wet his mouth before speaking again, taking the moment to think about this. His head felt like it was spinning, thoughts fractured and needing to be pieced together. This was... it was his kitchen, but in a shambles. “This can't have been overnight...”

Cautiously, he stepped towards the fridge, splinters from the table digging into his feet. “Not like this...” There was no way this much damage could have been caused so fast, even if the police had managed to barge their way into his house as they were threatening to. No, this amount of rust and grime was something only time and neglect could cause. Aoba placed his trembling fingers to the rusted handle, trying to recall what it was supposed to look like, and for a moment it was almost as though he could see it.

Suddenly, his head throbbed, and in pain he pressed his palm to his face, the thought that he should go and get his meds pushed aside in favour of assessing the situation. What the hell was going on? “Granny?” he called out again, louder this time. “Where are you? What's going on?” The only answer was complete silence. “Ren? This... this isn't funny!”

Again, Aoba's head throbbed, vision blurring for a moment before he gritted his teeth and turned back, heading back through the door he'd entered through, still calling for his grandmother and his Allmate. However, what he found through that doorway was something he could not have expected – the junk shop, in just as much of a decayed state as his kitchen. His workplace was... in his hallway? Again, Aoba could do little but stare in shock. “You can't be serious...”

Confused, he tiptoed across the debris, biting down firmly on his lip. He could taste blood, but it barely registered in his mind, especially once he opened the back door of the shop and found himself standing on a stone floor coated in dirt and rubble, with ancient-looking masonry walls surrounding him. Again, he found himself staring in shock, barely registering that he was trembling. This couldn't be real...

And yet, somehow, in the back of his mind, Aoba knew he wasn't dreaming.
