Game Summary: A post-apocalyptic sex game. The world ended. Everything that characters thought they knew turned out to be merely an illusion, and eventually that illusion broke and revealed the truth - a ruined wasteland with a very tentative grip on reality, that could be unpredictable and confusing. This world ran on belief, with a handful of natives able to alter elements of the world to their will. The problem was that the characters were not entirely real themselves, and this world was heavily influenced by belief. Should people let the truth of reality get to them too much, their existence would fail. To prevent fading from existence, a distraction was required, and the most reliable distraction was sex. The more 'real' someone was through this distraction, the more their belief could change little pieces of the world and make it at least a little easier to survive.
How long was your character in Game: 18 or 19 months or so
History of Character in their Game:
Aoba was one of the first arrivals, and entered the ruined world through a surreal and messed up structure that made absolutely no sense. Escaping the structure required the assistance of someone named Accelerator, who had a terrible attitude and strange mishmash of powers that frankly weirded Aoba out. While Accelerator was the first person Aoba met in this world, he would later become very important to him.
After the structure collapsed, the group of survivors found themselves needing to rely on beings known as the Hedonists, named Eudaimonia and Mencius. They explained to them how to keep themselves real and were able to create some food and supplies out of belief. With no idea what else to do, the survivors ended up following them, though it was never entirely clear where they were going, and they quickly established that the Hedonists were somewhat less than competent. It was, however, a long journey, with minimal supplies. For Aoba, this was made worse by his constant headaches and lack of medication to handle them.
Although Aoba is generally easy to embarrass, he didn't take long to adjust to the requirement of regular sex. Talking about the subject was always a problem, but actually getting down to it wasn't so bad. He had a fair few partners during the journey.
At some point during the journey, during an argument about sex (more specifically, being woken up for bad sex that definitely wasn't worth the lost sleep), Aoba accidentally used Scrap on Accelerator, who had become a recurring partner. In doing so, Aoba gained an impression of Accelerator's bloody past, leading him to become more curious about him. While he and Accelerator were passed out, however, someone thought it would be hilarious to pull their trousers down and pose them in some ridiculous manner. The poor sod who decided to try and re-dress them did so just as they were waking up, and ended up being the first person to encounter a glimpse of Aoba's other self before he'd fully come to his senses. Thanks to this, Aoba's first impression of Monty Navarro - who would become something of a record-keeper for the group of survivors - was one of a pervert who decided to strip someone while they were asleep.
Just to make matters worse with Navarro, a pool that could cause people to loudly announce either a hidden truth or a preposterous lie caused Aoba to reveal his powers to him. With Aoba being without his medication, Desire was able to surface for a moment to threaten Navarro, though Reason quickly resumed control and had no idea what happened. The result was that he now had someone afraid of him. Oops.
Eventually, the survivors reached a trap-laden castle. Much like elsewhere in this world, they weren't immune to odd effects that were alleviated by sex - one example was a loss of senses. They were able to settle here for a while, in spite of the dangers. Desire's efforts to take control were proving more effective now, and lasting for longer, thanks to the lack of medication and Aoba's general exhaustion by this point. It was during this time that Accelerator met Desire for the first time.
At some point during their time in the castle, Aoba responded to the call of something, and was drawn into a "story" to free the avatar of truth. While he didn't explore every aspect of the story, he found himself facing robots that wanted to burn him alive and a giant robot spider, and successfully collected one of the required tokens before freeing Aletheia. On his return, he found himself in a new setting entirely, and had been gifted a broken robot cat he had found in the spider's den. He would later enlist help in repairing it, and named it "Kumo." It proved to only be capable of speaking the truth.
The new location was more of a settlement. There were ruined cottages that characters could live in. Aoba and Accelerator chose to share, as by this point they had established a solid friendship. The long journey was over, and they were able to establish the place as a home of sorts. With neither of the two able to believe things into existence, they often had to rely on others for food. They tried to be fairly self-sufficient where they could, rummaging through junk and attempting to piece it together into something useful. They took over one of the houses to turn it into something of a shop, intending to trade their constructed and real items for believed supplies.
Strange effects still occurred, including physical transformations, an infestation of parasitic plants, and getting pulled into bubbles of false realities. During one of these instances, Desire again managed to cause problems with Monty Navarro, although in this instance it was retaliation - Aoba had wound up with the features of a rabbit, and Monty (having become a fox) attempted to hunt him with the help of Renart. While Accelerator attempted to deal with Monty and carried him up into the air, Desire used Scrap to make him fall and wiped his memory of the entire incident.
When pulled into a reality bubble, Aoba had the opportunity to meet the most important people to Accelerator, and vice versa. However, the main benefit of the trip into these bubbles proved to be the fact they were able to bring back some supplies - canned and preserved foods, clothing and even a futon. Aoba tried to bring Ren, his AllMate, but he dissolved in the process.
To his surprise, however, not long after this incident, Ren arrived in the settlement as a survivor. Aoba completely failed to recognise him at first, though - he was used to Ren being a tiny puppy, not an attractive man! Ren's arrival was something of a turning point in Aoba's understanding of himself, as he learned that Ren was originally the third part of his split personality, that he was born in a lab, and that he’d had a twin brother.
Ren wanted Reason and Desire to understand each other more, and with Accelerator wanting the same during a period where reality was easily influenced, Desire was able to surface for an extended period. Shockingly, he didn't cause all that much chaos, though he definitely didn't endear himself to Ren or Accelerator. With his fairly good behaviour during this incident (read: not mind-controlling someone into a potentially deadly fall), Aoba was able to understand both Desire's and Ren's perspective more, and ended up coming to an agreement with Desire. From this point onwards, Desire would switch with Reason more often.
Another unreality pocket occurred, this time mashing everyone’s worlds together and changing their memories to try and fit the new reality. It didn’t last, and everyone had to deal with watching the people they cared about from home disintegrate as the reality collapsed. During this time, however, Aoba’s and Accelerator’s altered memories had them convinced they were dating, and not long after this Aoba confronted Accelerator about the nature of their supposedly casual relationship. They ended up agreeing that they had fallen into a real relationship, even if it Accelerator definitely wasn’t the most romantic of partners.
This led to a little trouble for Aoba, as he wanted to be loyal to Accelerator even though it was unfeasible in this reality. To make it worse, he found that sticking with just one partner caused him to fade faster. Desire therefore took it upon himself to help out in this regard.
Unfortunately, Ren was eventually 'mislaid', becoming one of the vast number of survivors who just up and disappeared. Neither side of Aoba handled this particularly well, with Reason becoming mopey and Desire taking to pelting people with snowballs and mind-controlling Monty (who had unfortunately become something of a target for Desire's mischief) into holding a snowman on his head. To Aoba's surprise, though, another friend from home made an appearance - Koujaku, his childhood friend, who had a little trouble adjusting to Desire.
For the time being, Aoba was fairly content remaining in the settlement. He had Koujaku, he had Accelerator, and didn’t have much desire to get into exploring the mysteries of this reality. However, it did start to fall apart after a while - Accelerator was mislaid, and Koujaku’s experiences in horrifying nightmare bubbles caused him to distance himself from Aoba. The arrival of Mizuki - safe, sound, and definitely not in a coma - was very much welcomed (especially by Desire, who was delighted to find that Mizuki already knew and understood Aoba's split personality), but only helped him feel a little bit better about the whole situation.
He didn't quite have enough time to wrap his head around his newfound loneliness when the settlement was suddenly stripped of all belief-created items. Aoba tried to make himself useful, having been collecting and constructing items out of the junk for quite some time, but it wasn't long after this that he himself was mislaid.
How did they change from their canon personality wise:
There are two main areas in which Aoba's personality has developed - his understanding of his powers, and the relationship between "Reason" and "Desire".
Aoba is quite cautious with his powers. Due to his canon point, he had only just learned he'd had powers in the first place, and was already scared of them after accidentally putting his friend Mizuki in a coma. After using them to see if he could use his voice to influence other characters' "belief" over the network (influencing people to believe injuries he had sustained weren't there), he realised just how much power he could potentially wield in a world where belief could change reality. Worried about this, Aoba started to only use text posts on the network, for fear of accidentally causing problems.
Fortunately, befriending Accelerator - someone who possessed his own destructive powers, and had come from a world where there were others with powers - meant he had someone to talk about Scrap with, and someone who could provide him with advice and help. Because of Accelerator, Aoba feels as if he can use his powers in a positive way, though he remains cautious.
Thanks to both Accelerator and Ren wanting Reason and Desire to understand each other more, one event in Carvaka allowed Desire to surface for a while. Their current relationship draws from the "Morphine" route in canon - Reason and Desire are able to switch, can choose whether or not the other has awareness of their actions, and can have conversations with each other in their head. For the most part, it's Reason who remains in control, as he is the more... socially acceptable side of Aoba.
Desire has calmed down quite significantly. This is largely because Reason now understands his existence, accepts him, and allows him to take control every now and then. He is no longer lashing out, and values the newfound balance between him and Reason enough to try not to anger him. Having less to be angry about means that much of his behaviour comes across as more petty and even childish, resulting in Reason considering him similar to a moody teenager - he enjoys teasing and pushing people's buttons, just for the sake of keeping himself amused. He is still far more likely than Reason to use Scrap, more likely to get into confrontations, and hasn't lost his potential to be very dangerous if threatened.
Desire is still, however, testing the limits of what he can do without angering Reason enough to suppress him - suppression is the only means Reason has to punish him for bad behaviour, though Desire can and will retaliate by giving him a killer headache. Keeping his freedom is one of few motivations he has to play nice. Thus far, the only incident where Reason was sufficiently angered to suppress him for a while involved allowing Mikado to record them having sex, and then using a body swap incident and access to Mikado's phone as an excuse to share the video to the entire network.
How did they change from their canon physically: Aoba has lost a significant amount of weight without access to proper food - note that he was already pretty skinny. His hair has become even longer and messier.
Powers: Aoba gained no new powers from his time in Carvaka - the power that some characters received depended on them having no special abilities already. Aoba possesses an ability known as Scrap, which allows him to interfere with other people's consciousness. There are two main ways in which Scrap is shown.
1. Voice.
When Aoba uses a particular tone of voice, he implants ideas into a person's head. This is usually done unintentionally, because his “Scrap” voice also happens to be his “customer service” voice – this is why his sales are so good. He prefers not to use it consciously, but will do so under pressure. His voice can be pretty powerful, as seen in Mink's route when he uses it to convince a group of policemen that their legs are incapable of movement.
2. Touch.
With physical contact, in combination with his voice, Aoba is also able to fully enter a person's consciousness, explore it and alter it. This allows him to see that person's inner workings – their fears, emotions and memory. However, this is very risky, as the wrong move can twist their perceptions or even (in the worst case scenario) destroy their mind completely. While he can use it to help people, by helping them to fight whatever is holding them back, saying or doing the wrong thing at the wrong time can be disastrous for both him and his target.
It's also worthwhile to note that, while it's not an ability as such, Aoba has sensation in his hair, so he can really feel when it's touched. He really does not like his hair being touched, because it can seriously hurt. This is pretty much the entire reason why his hair is such a mess – past the shoulders, the sensation is dulled, and at that point he trims it himself.
Possessions:
Coil. Basically a smartphone watch with a holographic projector and UI. Its capabilities are limited without an internet connection or a phone network, but it should still be able to tell the time and use a few apps.
Kumo. A damaged robotic cat (AllMate) that Aoba found and repaired during his time in Carvaka. As a gift from Aletheia, the avatar of truth, it can only speak the truth. It doesn't have much of a personality, due to the damage and the fact Aoba wasn't able to access proper AllMate parts to repair it. Its functions are limited compared to canon AllMates, due to no internet connection. He can use it as a messenger, ask it to record things, give him reminders, and similar basic tasks.
Glowstones. Aoba and Accelerator found these during an exploration. They are rocks, and they glow.
Hand-cranked power generator. Aoba and Accelerator found it during an exploration.
